Russ College faculty and staff honored for accomplishments

ATHENS, Ohio (May 14, 2012) – The Russ College of Engineering and Technology honored faculty and staff Friday evening for outstanding performance over the past academic year.

“The recipients of our departmental and college teaching and research awards highlight the dedication of the Russ College to the education of our students, with an emphasis on developing the skills necessary to be societal leaders in not only the nuts and bolts of engineering, but also the understanding of our professions’ impact on the health, welfare and prosperity of humankind,” said Russ College Dean Dennis Irwin.

Established in 1981, the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Awards are given each year to recognize the achievements of faculty in the Russ College. The awards include a cash award and a personalized plaque.

The Russ Outstanding Research Paper Award recognizes research and scholarship excellence across the college by faculty who published papers in academic journals. The 2012 recipient was Assistant Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Monica Burdick for her paper “Gangliosides Expressed on Breast Cancer Cells are E-selectin Ligands.”

Selected by Russ College students, the Russ Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award recognizes one professor with outstanding teaching and advising across the college. The recipient for 2012 was Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Douglas Lawrence.

Faculty awards also included the Marvin E. and Ann D. White Awards, which carry cash awards of $500 each and personalized plaques. The awards were established by alumnus White and his wife Ann to acknowledge success in both research and teaching.

The White Research Awards honor a faculty member in each department of the Russ College. Recipients for 2012 were: Deak Arch, assistant professor in the Department of Aviation; Monica Burdick, assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; Tiao Chang, professor in the Department of Civil Engineering; Avinash Kodi, assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Kevin Berisso, assistant professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Management; Dusan Sormaz, associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering; and JungHun Choi, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The White Teaching Awards, also honoring a faculty member in each department of the Russ College, recognize those dedicated to teaching and student advising. Recipients for 2012 included: Bryan Branham, chair in the Department of Aviation; Darin Ridgway, associate professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering; Deborah McAvoy, assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering; Frank Van Graas, Russ Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; Pete Klein, chair and professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Management; Dale Masel, associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering; and John Cotton, assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

The Outstanding Administrative, Technical and Classified Employee Awards honor employees with superior results-based performance and award recipients with a $750 cash prize and personalized plaque. The 2012 recipients were Tammy Jordan, Randy Mulford and Albert Schubert, respectively.
