Ohio University chemical engineering sophomore awarded regional scholarship from ACEC

By Joe Barbaree

Athens, Ohio (May 29, 2012) – An Ohio University sophomore chemical engineering major from the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology has received a regional scholarship from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC).

Courtney Sterrick of Vienna, West Va., was awarded ACEC’s 2012-2013 Ohio University Student Scholarship of $2,000.

“I was really excited when I received the call telling me I had received the scholarship,” recalled Sterrick.  “It feels great to know that my hard work in and out of class has been recognized.”

The scholarship is offered to a junior or senior Russ College student with the goal of encouraging engineering students to consider the consulting engineering field as a career choice.

Sterrick first heard about the scholarship during a meeting of the Society of Women Engineers, which led her to fill out basic application materials as well as a complete an essay on ethics in engineering.

Adam Freed, a professional engineer with Pickering Associates in Parkersburg, West Va., who had supervised Sterrick during her internship at the company this past winter, recommended Sterrick for the scholarship.

Sterrick has served as vice president of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, secretary of the Society of Women Engineers and member of engineering honorary society Tau Beta Pi.

A peer-led team learning leader for the general chemistry series, she is a newly elected Russ College Engineering Ambassador for the 2012 - 2013 school year.

In her future career, Sterrick hopes to focus on the properties of materials and how they vary by their molecular structures. She will begin a three-rotation co-op assignment with Dupont Washington Works in Washington, West Va., in June, working in the specialty compounding area.
