Ohio University chemical engineering professor named executive editor of online international science journal
By Joe Barbaree
Athens, Ohio (June 4, 2012) – Professor of chemical engineering Tingyue Gu of Ohio University’s Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology has been appointed as executive editor of the Journal of Microbial & Biochemical Technology.
Gu will handle manuscript reviews, contribute to editorial articles and research articles, solicit contributions and organizing editorial board meetings.
According to Gu, though new, the journal has a relatively high self-calculated impact factor. “This is a measure reflecting the average number of citations to articles published in academic journals,” Gu explained.
An official impact factor for it has yet to be released by Thomson Reuters, which publishes the figures in the yearly Journal Citation Reports.
Gu said the source of the journal’s success lies in its online, open-access format for researchers. “To many people's surprise, including mine, online journals are gaining popularity quickly because of unrestricted easy access,” he said.
Before being appointed executive editor, Gu served on the journal’s editorial board for several years. He also served on the editorial boards of several other journals, including Bioprocess and Biosystems Engineering.
In 2009 and 2010, Gu was among the top five percent of cited authors for journals in biology and biochemistry, according to analysis from Thomson Reuters. He most recently edited the book "Green Biomass Pretreatment and Processing Methods for Bioenergy Production," which will be submitted to Springer Publishing in July 2012.
