Posted by Mike Smith Senior, Aviation Today was a big day for my flight training. I just returned from a cross country flight to Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland. What normally takes over 4 hours by car took me only one hour. It could have been shorter but we flew during Cleveland Hopkins’ rush hour so we were being vectored all over. It was really good experience and I can’t wait to fly again!

Posted by Jonathan Robe Senior, Mechanical Engineering Winter quarter is winding down and I’m looking forward to Spring Break and spring weather. This past week I’ve been busy with homework and my Senior Design project. We will be doing some force testing on our O-ring installation fixtures to make sure they won’t break when they’re used. If our results are good, we’ll deliver our designs to our customer.

Posted by Nathan Galieti Senior, Aviation I work for Residence Life at the OU Student Center and today, I couldn’t believe how many people were there. Or, more specifically, were there on the third floor. They were there for the “Got Swabbed” bone marrow donor drive and we helped OU break the Guinness world record for most donors! We nearly doubled the goal with 2300 registered.

Posted by Marissa Page Senior, Industrial Technology In high school one of my favorite things was the dances. In college I thought I would never get the chance to dress up, dance all night long, and hang out with my closest friends. I was wrong. This past weekend I got that chance and created some great memories. I traveled less than a mile to the OU Inn, where my sorority rented out a ballroom for our Date Party. It was a formal affair with food, dancing, and close friends. The perfect chance to let loose and have FUN!

Posted by Nathan Galieti Senior, Aviation This afternoon, I was at a meeting of the OU Flight Team. We meet every Sunday to prepare for our national competition at St. Louis this May. I'm looking forward to the competition. As a team we didn’t qualify last year, but we turned it around at the regional banquet this past fall and earned one of three tickets from our region to compete at the national level.

Posted by Jonathan Robe Senior, Mechanical Engineering For my senior design project, my team and I are designing several fixtures to install o-rings onto the syrup dispenser for a fountain drink machine. Our design is targeted towards employees with disabilities who are employed by a local company as a way for us to give back to the local community. Right now we are completing our prototypes and hope to conduct testing in the next several weeks. Our goal is to deliver a working prototype within the next month and then we will be able to determine if our designs will meet our customer’s needs. This past weekend I took a break from homework to watch my 14 year-old brother’s basketball game. Unfortunately, his team couldn’t pull it off and lost by six points.

Posted by AJ Hendricks Senior, Electrical Engineering This week was another event filled week with intramural sports and other fun things. There are many different games you can participate in, anywhere from competitive basketball to dodgeball. Currently my friends and I are in a recreational basketball league, our team name is the Jellyfish, and we lost our last game 43-42, a heartbreaker. Earlier in the week though, we improved our broomball record to 3-1 and improved our playoff position. Today was the second annual Engineers Frostbite 5K run. The run helps raise money for scholarships for students in the college. A team of Engineering Ambassadors got together again this year and ran. We all ran fairly good times, but finished behind the Running Club, go figure. I ran better than last year and improved my time by 30 seconds. I was pretty happy with the results.

Posted by Matt Sargent Senior, Computer Science I just finished up with my morning class and am about to plan out the work that I have to get done this weekend. Since it is almost the end of the quarter, that means that it is getting to be time for the final projects in all of my classes. I am about to hand in my final design for my database course, which means that I need to start implementing my database soon. I also have to finalize a parser design that can be used to generate automatic test cases for c++ code. My other project that I have to get working on involves implementing a graphical user interface in JAVA. In about four hours from now I also need to give a demonstration of my latest project at work. I work for the VITAL lab and am currently coding a project that visualizes files for coding projects. This software will eventually be used by teams of programmers in order to let them see in a 3d format which files in a project are being worked on in order to avoid coding conflicts (such as two coders editing the same file at the same time). While all of these projects are challenging, working on the projects has helped me learn more than any class alone has.

Posted by Kristie Easley Junior, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering In my electrochemical engineering class, groups of students are required to design a shoe-box sized vehicle that uses electrochemical reactions to make the car travel 60 feet and stop. My group is powering the car using a lithium ion battery. To stop the car, we are breaking a copper wire by plating the metal onto another wire. My group began assembling the car this week. We hope to have the battery built early next week so we can demonstrate our design to the professor.

Posted by Kellie Chambers Senior, Industrial and Systems Engineering Today my senior design team met at our company to finalize our project plans. It has been very interesting and challenging to work on real issues at a real company. Our biggest challenge so far has been prioritizing the issues we have seen and deciding which ones we will have time to help resolve. Now that we have decided, I look forward to finally getting started!
