CE Senior Design

This week my senior design team chose to design a four span prestressed concrete highway bridge for our senior design project. I'm excited and a little nervous at the same time. It's going to be a busy ten weeks preparing the design calculations and drawings for the project, but I can't wait to see the pieces of the project start to fall into place.

The design team that I'm on consists of pretty much the same group of guys that I've been doing class projects with my entire four years here in Russ College. It's interesting to think back about all of the projects we've worked on together and how they've steadily grown in complexity over the years. It's impressive how far we've come since freshman year.

Winter Ends, Spring Begins

These past couple weeks have been a whirlwind of activity. Winter quarter went very well. I made the Dean's List this quarter, which was a pleasant surprise considering my workload of 18 credit hours. Our senior design project is going very well; we met recently with our customer and he is excited about our progress.

We spent spring break down at New Smyrna Beach, which is about 20 minutes from Daytona. It was good to be able to step away from the schoolwork and responsibility for a week and relax.

On Monday classes start up again to some dismay, but it's good to get back to work and finally see the fruits of all the labor of 4 years of hard work. One last quarter in Athens, then out into the "real world."

My Finals Week

This quarter’s finals week was the lightest I’ve had in my four years. Both of my classes for my business minor were on Monday. On Tuesday my senior design group drove up to Columbus for a meeting with American Electric Power about the software package they have supplied us. I finished on Wednesday with a take-home final due in my one electrical engineering class. I got most of the work done over the weekend and just had a little left to finish Wednesday morning. After turning in the test I drove home to Cleveland to see my family for a few days before meeting with my roommates and driving to Florida for the break.

Career Search Progress

Winter quarter is officially over! I'm excited for Spring to begin, but of course I'm sad that it will be my last quarter in Athens. Recently I have started my career search. Despite the economy, the search has actually been a positive experience. I have had the opportunity to visit and interview with several companies. The interview process is quite enjoyable. My perspective of the process might change when I receive my first rejection letter, but until that day, I like it. With every interview I gain a better perspective of what employers are looking for, as well as what I have to offer. I suppose when those two aspects align I'll find my perfect fit.

Crazy Finals Week

I just recently finished up a crazy finals week. I had 5 finals and a final presentation this week. On top of that, I was getting up at 5 AM each morning for the steel bridge competition. We only had access to the fabrication shop from 6-8 AM each morning so we had to put in our time then. It made for some long days but at the end of the week it was definitely worth it. Our bridge is ready for welding and will soon be ready for competition. GO OU!

Finally Finals

It's the middle of finals week, and I'm getting excited for spring break. I just finished up my last project of the quarter, and in a little bit I am going to start studying for my last two finals. To celebrate finals week being almost over, a few friends and I went out to dinner earlier tonight. We are all excited for spring quarter, and we talked about getting some intramural teams together next quarter. I think that everyone would be up for forming a soccer team, but I hope that we can gather enough people for a softball team too.

Winter Quarter Wrap-up

Well the last two weeks have been a whir! I've been busy working on my senior design project. My team and I have really logged the hours this winter in the lab. Our prototypes are almost complete, so we should be able to meet our deadline for delivering our product to our customer early spring quarter. We are right now in the middle of finals week and I've been studying for my first (and last) final of the quarter. I'm looking forward to Wednesday evening when I'll be done with all my work for winter quarter. With the NCAA basketball tournament about to begin, I look forward to taking some time during break to watch some college hoops.

Spring Break Planning

Today some friends and I are putting the final thoughts into our spring break trip. We are going mountain biking, and we are trying to decide between Georgia and Colorado. We like northern GA for being closer and being more condensed with bike trails and non-riding stuff. The problem is that GA is much more likely to get rained on than CO. It would take much longer to get to CO, but it would be an experience just to drive cross country… and I’ve never seen the Rockies. We’re going to see how we feel later this week and pick one.

ISE Senior Design Cookout

The professor for the industrial and systems engineering senior design course had all of the seniors and grad students in the major over to his house for a cookout. It was fun to be able to hang out with our professor, his family and all the other students in such a laid back atmosphere. We all really enjoyed eating, playing games and catching up on life.

New Building Tour

Today we were able to take a tour of the new ARC building....pretty sweet! The interior of the building is still in the early stages of development, but we were able to get a good idea of the floor layout. I have to say my favorite part is the café. I can't imagine all of the extra hours I would have spent in Stocker if I never had to leave for food, or more importantly, coffee! I look forward to seeing what the building looks like upon completion.
