The last few weeks have been extremely busy. Senior design is starting to get into crunch time so our hours have picked up. The two classes that I’m taking for my business minor have midterm tests coming up. I’m signed up for two intramural teams, volleyball and flag football. We won our first games in each earlier this week to start the season.
I was honored to be nominated for the Gerald Loehr Senior Leadership Award. There are six nominees for the award, one from each department within the Russ College. There were two ambassadors among the six nominees. I was nominated from the EECS department, and Kellie Chambers from ISE. We interview last Wednesday so hopefully we find out soon.

Tonight I am attempting to study for a test. It's odd, but I almost feel like I
have forgotten how to study. The majority of my classes are project based and it's rare to have to actually study for a test in an IT class. I suppose that's a good problem to have- I definitely prefer applying concepts in a project than regurgitating facts on a test. Hope it goes well in the morning!

Each year three different senior capstone design courses are offered. The three categories are Land Development, Environmental, and Structural/Foundation. I have chosen to take the Structural/Foundation design course which is offered in Spring Quarter. My group has been assigned to design the 4 span highway bridge over the Tiffin River on US 24 in northwest Ohio. The preliminary design chosen by my group is a precast concrete girder bridge. The main part of the design which we are working on currently involve the amount and location of the rebar in the concrete and the cross bracing needed for stability. We are attempting to design a structure with adequate strength, limited movement, maximum lifespan, and lowest cost. It is truly engineering at its fullest.

On Saturday, typically from 10-1pm, members of the Athens community have organized a local farmers market where people can purchase locally grown food and other products. Over the weekend, I went to the farmers market for the first time and enjoyed tasting and seeing the fresh fruit, bread, jams, and other items. While I was there, I picked up some homemade salsa to enjoy over the next few weeks.

Here at OU we're headed into the fourth week of the quarter. While we caught a glimpse of beautiful spring weather over the weekend, the rainy weather has returned in force. Fortunately, I enjoyed the warm weather while it lasted. I also was able to participate in a community outreach this weekend providing food to needy members in the Athens community; it was a lot of fun. Well, now that Monday is here, I have to get back to work on my materials lab report.

After finishing the design competition held at New Mexico State, and thankfully after getting mostly caught up from missing a week of school for it, I can say that the solar collector design worked! While unfortunately we didn't win our task, we did get to see our bench scale parabolic trough throw some real steam. Amazingly we designed and built it to the right specifications the first try, so when we actually took it out into the sun for the first time ever, we didn't have to modify a thing; it started working properly right away! Also, I think our design may have been the only one that could generate power rather than consume power. I just hope our design gets more people to realize how solar thermal power is about as clean as power generation gets and is very viable right now. (More photos)

Our corporate trip for Engineering Ambassadors began in Columbus at the high school I attended. The ambassadors ran activities and Q&A sessions with high school students involved in Project Lead the Way. It was very fun but strange to think that only four years ago I was in those very seats. That night we enjoyed each other's company at a dinner at Buca di Beppo and then a dueling piano bar.
The following day we headed to Bremen, Ohio to visit Westerman. Westerman is a leading manufacturer of equipment for the gas and oil production industry, as well as nuclear storage, marine hoists, and SCADA systems and controls. It was a great learning experience to be able to see their manufacturing facilities and learn about both the history and future of their company.

We are making great progress on our senior design project. The weather lately has been pretty rainy, which doesn't make it so bad to be inside occasionally to work on the project. It is very rewarding work, as the software we use for our analysis is used by all the major power companies in Ohio, such as AEP and Duke Energy. Hopefully we can progress far enough to where our report will provide some good insight for our customer and will allow them to make some changes to the system per our recommendations.

Well, today I enjoyed a few competitive rounds of Bingo at the local assisted living facility. My table of residents seemed quite cheery and friendly until one of the players won her third round, raising her prize amount to seventy-five cents. As she celebrated receiving her third quarter of the night, others frowned--the poor lady was accused of cheating! I'm not one to point fingers, but I do believe that she was playing by her own rules tonight. She continued to play
by her own rules until the end of the night, when she left with earnings of one whole dollar!! (It was four quarters to be precise)

Today is the only day I have class this week! I couldn’t have planned it better. Since my freshman year I planned it where my last quarter of college was my easiest, where I could enjoy the sun, my friends, and make lasting memories. Spring Quarter for me consists of 12 credit hours, which means no classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Since today is over, I have no class tomorrow, a field trip to West Virginia to the Toyota Plant, then off to Columbus for a Corporate Trip for Engineering Ambassadors. The field trip on Wednesday is for one of my classes and should be interesting to see how Toyota does things in a manufacturing environment. The Corporate Trip to Columbus we are visiting a local High School and telling them about engineering/going to school at OU, and we are also visiting an OU alum at work and taking a tour of Westerman. What a nice week to a final spring quarter! |
