Exceptionally busy again today with a few midterms and a continuance of projects and final proposal papers. The weather in Athens is pretty muggy as well, which doesn't help to keep the students cooled/calmed down. My senior design group is currently working on finishing our final presentation for the quarter which consists of offering suggegstions for improvement for a warehouse facility in Athens, OH. I am looking forward to completing this 2 quarter long project, considering I have seen the addition of several grey hairs on my head. This weekend should be fun with my fraternity's annual camping trip coming up. And a last minute addition of our Club Baseball awards banquet will also be held this week on Thursday at Charles J. Ping Center.

I wish you all a great summer!

Memorial Day Break

Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone! I came home for the weekend to visit my friends and family and get some R & R before my last few weeks of college arrive. Next week looks pretty busy with a jumble of tests, projects, and presentations; however I am looking forward to my fraternity's end of the year date party. This year, we are traveling to Logan, OH for a camping trip in which case every member of the fraternity brings food, drinks, etc... and a date of their choice. Also, next Tuesday and Thursday, I will be attending the department's awards banquet and ambassador dinner. Until next time-Take care!

Hocking Hills

The weather this weekend allowed me to get up to the Hocking Hills region once again. The Hocking Hills region is my favorite location in Ohio. It is near Logan, OH and is less than an hour from campus. It is one of the many reasons I love this campus and this area so much. This weekend, I went hiking and rock climbing in the Conkle's Hollow Recreational Area. There are many excellent cliffs in the area and the vast amount of rainfall we have received in the past week made for some heavily flowing waterfalls. The climbing was a lot of fun and I hope the weather cooperates so I can head back soon.

A Weekend of Visitors

This past weekend was full of people coming to visit me on campus. I spent Friday night finishing a take home midterm and some other assorted homework so that I could have the rest of the weekend off.

On Saturday, one of my best friends from high school came down to visit. It was the first time that he had been to OU and he really liked spending the day here. I was able to show him campus and the surrounding area before going to get dinner uptown. We met up with some of my friends from OU and ended up hanging out at their apartment for the majority of the night. In the morning, we got breakfast at Union Street Diner before my friend left.

About an hour after he was on the road my parents got on campus. They came down to visit and also to go to a senior awards banquet at night. We had a nice dinner in the Baker Center ballroom followed by the awards ceremony. Unfortunately, my parents had to leave right after the ceremony was over in order to make it back to Cleveland at a reasonable hour. I am happy that I had so many people come to campus this weekend, but now I have to play catch-up in my classes and at work.

Spring Quarter Wrapping Up

So Spring Quarter is winding down but we still have three weeks of school to go. It's amazing to see all of the things we've accomplished this quarter: my design team and I are wrapping up our senior design project (we made o-ring installation devices--our design is shown below), and I'm wrapping up my projects in other classes.

I think this week won't be too busy for me; the last two have just been packed with lab reports, project work and homework. Maybe I'll get a chance to enjoy some of the wonderful spring weather if only it would stop raining.

Tau Beta Pi Awards Banquet

The annual student awards banquet focused on honoring engineering students who displayed “integrity and excellence” in their studies. I greatly enjoyed the dinner, learning about the achievements of other engineers (especially through the eyes of the Mechanical Engineering professor Dr. Bob), and seeing so many fellow ambassadors honored. Also, my parents came down for the event and it was fun to hang out with them since I haven’t made it home in a while.

Dance Show

Tonight my roommates and I all went out to support a former roommate who is a senior in the School of Dance. She was dancing in a piece in the early show and choreographed a piece in the later show. It was really interesting to see their "senior capstone" showing all they had learned over the past four years. It is a very different display than what you might see in one of the engineering disciplines senior capstone courses. I also attended because my roommates and I are currently taking a modern dance class. I have never laughed so hard in a class before and would encourage everyone (boys and girls alike) to take a dance class before you graduate!

Fall Quarter Academic Advising

Students in the Russ College are required to meet with their advisors prior to scheduling to ensure that they are taking all of the required courses and to check their progress in the classes that they are currently enrolled in. Since this week was advising week, I met with Dr. Prudich (my advisor) to get my DARS and work out my class schedule for the fall quarter. Even though I will have some more involved courses next year, including unit ops lab, senior design, and process controls, I am looking forward getting hands on experience in the lab. Also, because many of the courses require group reports, I will gain valuable experience in both working as part of a team and in giving presentations.

OU Research Expo II

Today had some good news: our WERC design team (Andrew Szink, Scott Hunter, Jeff Cannon, and myself) presented our project at OU's Research and Creativity Expo today, and we won 2nd place in our category! The Research and Creativity Expo is an event where any student with an interesting project may present it to the university and can also asked to be judged. The projects ranged from scientific research with bioengineering studies like cell adhesion in cancer to mathematical modeling of biomass/coal gasification all the way to artistic exhibits.

If you haven't seen my previous posts, my team came up with a way to combine distillation and power generation using solar thermal power. Two people who came to see our project were of particular interest: one was from the OU's Innovation Center and another was a faculty member who worked with a group of international students who actually arrived at almost the same idea. Both asked if I considered developing the idea further, and I'm in the process of deciding how I want to follow up with this project... I'll explain that decision as I figure it out.

OU Research Expo

Today I was at a research expo for the project that I am working on at the VITAL Lab. Any student at OU who has been working on a research project had the opportunity to present their research here. Projects were broken down by subject, and the top projects in each subject were able to win cash prizes. The winner from our EECS group 1 were students who make educational games at the VITAL Lab. The games are made with a game engine that was also created by the students over the past few years. One of my friends studying astrophysics was also able to win a prize for his research. I do not think that I could explain his research well, the general subject matter had to do with black holes at the center of galaxies and the patterns of energy that they give off over time.
