The Athens Music Scene

When I was giving a tour of our engineering building a couple weeks ago, a parent asked me an interesting question: what is the night life like for people who are underage? He assumed that there isn’t one, but this is incorrect! There many things for people to do who aren’t twenty-one, but personally I am very involved in Athens’ music scene. Uptown, there are a number of great venues where anyone can see bands play. Sure, a few require you to be twenty-one, but for most you only have to be eighteen. My favourites are The Union, Casa Cantina and Donkey Coffee (where all ages can get in). In addition to spending my weekend nights seeing great local bands, I also play in my own band, Five Deadly Venoms. We have played in several events for this weekend’s Halloween celebration, including a great house show last night. I play drums, keyboards (electric piano, ARP-OMNI2, Korg M500 Preset and Farfisa) and sing. Below is a picture of us, taken outside my farmhouse for Backdrop Magazine. I am on the far left.

Halloween Weekend Activities

Halloween weekend starts today!

Fortunately, my unit (United States Air Force) did not call me in for drills this weekend and I will be able to enjoy the Halloween weekend with my friends.

Halloween has been a huge event for Ohio University for a long time. It's not an event only for our students--faculty, alumni, local people and students from other colleges from Ohio, WV and more enjoy the weekend as well. Tonight, a few of my friends will be coming down from Penn State to celebrate our greatest event, THE HALLOWEEN WEEKEND!

This weekend, there are several events that will be held at our university. Tonight, the School of Music's Symphony Orchestra will be performing with the Halloween custom at Memorial Auditorium at 7:30. Also the Bobcat men’s basketball team will be going against Taylor. And lastly tomorrow night, Court Street will be blocked for us to enjoy our Halloween night!

Preparing for Halloween

This weekend is Halloween weekend and it sure to be a lot of fun. Even before attending this university, I have heard many people talk about Halloween in Athens. It has traditionally been a huge block party that people come from all over to attend. Court Street is closed down and is just filled with tons of people in all sorts of different costumes. There are live bands set up on the street and everyone just has a great time. I am especially excited because I have some friends from back home coming to visit that I haven't seen since the summer.

Intramural Football

One thing I look forward to every Monday is being able to participate in a flag football intramural team. It gives me an opportunity to get some exercise and have a lot of fun doing it. Many of the intramurals have both competitive leagues which are a little more serious and recreational leagues for those who are just looking to have fun. There are all kinds of different intramural leagues which you can get involved with throughout the year. Some of the other ones I have been involved with over the years are flag football, floor hockey, basketball, indoor soccer, broomball, and softball. I would highly suggest for any incoming freshman to get involved in as many intramurals as possible. It is a great way to get outside and meet new people.

In tonight's intramural game we faced the other undefeated team in our league and took our first loss of the season. Even though the game didn't go our way, it was still a blast to be able to compete with some of my friends through intramurals. Hopefully our luck changes next week.

Parents Weekend

Since my parents couldn’t make it into Athens for the weekend, my sister decided to come down from Cleveland and visit. I had not seen Katie for several months and it was exciting to show her my new apartment and just hang out. We attended the Saturday night hockey game (where the Bobcats defeated the Canadian Select Goderich Sailors 11-2) and went up to Coldstone for some ice cream. Before leaving, my sister invited me up to visit so hopefully I can make it up to Cleveland over the long winter break.

Pumpkin Carving

This Friday I had a few friends over to carve pumpkins, drink apple cider, and play cards. Carving the pumpkins was a little bit tricky--all we had were kitchen knives. I remember carving pumpkins as a kid with these special little saws with orange handles, but we looked everywhere and couldn't find any. They must be sold out for the season. Anyway, steak knives seemed to work.

I got fairly impatient with the carving, and my artistic abilities aren't the best, so I went for humor and carved the letter pi into mine (get it? pumpkin pie!). My friend Sam managed to carve the Incredible Hulk on one side and Picasso on the other, while the other two pumpkins were classic scary faces. We put them out on the balcony and lit them up. It was a miserable and rainy night, so they looked fearsome. Since the weather was so crummy, we stayed warm and dry, playing cards and watching goofy YouTube videos late into the night.

Next weekend is the much-anticipated Halloween party. I'm going to miss a good part of the weekend because I'm going to a programming competition in Cincinnati, but I think I'll be home in time for the Saturday night block party, which is always pretty fun. At the very least, we'll be able to light up the Jack-O-Lanterns again for everyone to admire.

Seeing the New Academic Research Center

On Friday afternoon, I had the opportunity to take a tour of the new Academic Research Center which will be the new home to most of the classrooms for the Russ College of Engineering and Technology. The building isn’t completely finished but it is coming along beautifully and will be open this coming winter quarter.

Homecoming was this past weekend as well and it was very nice to see all of the returning alumni. There were many people that have graduated in the time I’ve been attending Ohio University that I have not seen since their graduation. There was the annual Homecoming parade on Saturday morning that I attended, and then we all headed to uptown Athens to get some food, drinks and catch up with the visiting alums.

flight team competition results

Well, the Flight Team competition ended on Saturday, and after a long, cold week in Michigan, I am happy to be back at OU! Unfortunately, the team did not advance to nationals, but we did place second in the flight events and third in ground events.

It was a very fun, sometimes stressful week which included squirt-gun fights, techno music, frantic studying, airplane pushing, and lots of fast food. The team members also got the chance to talk about and compare flight programs with other teams, and I think we came back with some ideas to make our program stronger. Overall, it was an extremely positive experience, and all I can say is that I wish I had joined the team sooner!

The pictures below were taken by Sara Hetrick and Ben Endress. The first picture is taken from up in the air:

This picture shows all of the teams lined up in their planes, ready to start an event:

The last picture with our team in flight suits was something silly we did for the message-drop event. We didn't wear flight suits and mustaches the entire time (although, maybe we should have!)

My Homecoming Weekend

This weekend was Homecoming Weekend. Homecoming weekend is my favorite weekend of the year because it is a time when all of the alumni come back to Athens. Moreover, my brother and sister are both alums, and each year make it a point to come back and reunite with their old roommates and friends. This year, my brother was unable to visit because he had to travel for work, but my sister came down.

Also, a chemical engineering alumnus, Dwight McVey, came to talk to a few senior ChEs. Dwight graduated from OU a couple years ago and now works for Chemineer which specializes in mixing technology. Dwight talked to us about searching for a job and interviewing for said job. He explained the importance of having a relevant resume for the job in which you are applying for as well as a specific cover letter for each job. One useful piece of advice he mentioned was to look at an interview as a time to sell yourself to the company. I think that this advice will be very useful as I start interviewing for potential jobs.

CE Senior Design Progress

The past week has been a whirlwind! The week got started off on the right foot, our flag football team won again, securing us a spot in the playoffs.

The rest of the week was defined by my Senior Design project. Our project goal is to design a subdivision. This includes everything from surveying the property to designing water and sewer lines. Friday our third phase was due, including cut and fill calculations, grading and road design. My partners and I spent approximately 25 hours working on our project and attended all of our classes, completed other homework and studied for midterms.

Needless to say, I was happy to go home this weekend and relax. The weekend was great. I killed my second coyote!
