One thing I look forward to every Monday is being able to participate in a flag football intramural team. It gives me an opportunity to get some exercise and have a lot of fun doing it. Many of the intramurals have both competitive leagues which are a little more serious and recreational leagues for those who are just looking to have fun. There are all kinds of different intramural leagues which you can get involved with throughout the year. Some of the other ones I have been involved with over the years are flag football, floor hockey, basketball, indoor soccer, broomball, and softball. I would highly suggest for any incoming freshman to get involved in as many intramurals as possible. It is a great way to get outside and meet new people.
In tonight's intramural game we faced the other undefeated team in our league and took our first loss of the season. Even though the game didn't go our way, it was still a blast to be able to compete with some of my friends through intramurals. Hopefully our luck changes next week.

The past week has been a whirlwind! The week got started off on the right foot, our flag football team won again, securing us a spot in the playoffs.
The rest of the week was defined by my Senior Design project. Our project goal is to design a subdivision. This includes everything from surveying the property to designing water and sewer lines. Friday our third phase was due, including cut and fill calculations, grading and road design. My partners and I spent approximately 25 hours working on our project and attended all of our classes, completed other homework and studied for midterms.
Needless to say, I was happy to go home this weekend and relax. The weekend was great. I killed my second coyote!

My favorite hobby and activity, by far, is mountain biking—-lucky for me that the south-eastern Ohio River valley is home to some of the best mountain biking in the region. I just got back from a days’ ride with my friend at Mount Wood (a park about 12 miles outside of Parkersburg, WV and an hour drive from Athens). This was my first trip to Mount Wood and it is a shame it has taken me this long to go because there are some fantastic trails there and it is reasonably close for a weekend trip.
I regularly ride here in Athens at Sells Park and Strouds Run State Park. Both Sells and Strouds are within riding distance from my apartment and have great trails which are maintained by the local bike shops and clubs. When I have a little extra time, I take the half hour drive out to Lake Hope State Park which has 17+ miles of trails to ride. In my opinion, Ohio University is a mountain biker’s (or any outdoor lover’s) dream.

OU offers a variety of recreation courses for students to take pass/fail for one credit hour a quarter. Courses vary from ultimate frisbee to swimming to bowling; broomball, basketball, jogging, and others are also available depending on the quarter.
This quarter I decided to take ice skating with my roommate. The class meets twice a week at the ice rink. Mostly we free skate and practice basic skills, but sometimes we play games like sharks and minnows or capture the flag. The course is a lot of fun and a nice change of pace from
my engineering classes. Also, I can now skate forwards and backwards without falling.

One event that I look forward to every year I have been at OU is ASCE's (American Society of Civil Engineers) annual golf outing. This year I was part of the committee who organized the outing, which was held this past weekend. It turned out to be a big success.
The outing was a big commitment and took a significant portion of my time over the past couple of weeks, but the satisfaction of knowing you were part of something successful made it worth it. My team ended up finishing close to dead last but the outing was still a lot of fun.
I would highly suggest for prospective students to become involved with their respective student organizations within the college of engineering. Every organization has events such as this one where you can network with alumni in a social setting.

I have done a couple different intramurals sports in my time here at OU. My roommates and I have tried out softball, volleyball, floor hockey, dodgeball and even cornhole. Unfortunately, we haven’t had very much success in any of those. But this quarter we’re trying out flag football and the tides have turned. So far we’re 2 -0! Last week we put up some big numbers, beating the other team by mercy rule 48 – 18 and this week we won with a Doug Flutie like Hail Mary as the clock ran out! We’re in it to win it this quarter. I am looking to bring home that championship T-shirt that everyone is after.

Tonight was the first intramural broomball game of the season. This is my second year with the same team--the Penguins--so we decided to try out the competitive league. Although I've played intramural soccer and floor hockey, I'd have to say that broomball is the most entertaining and enjoyable. The game takes place on an ice rink, and the players wear sneakers and run on the ice, trying to shoot a ball into a goal with sticks that slightly resemble brooms. It's fairly dangerous, so we wear helmets.
Luckily the ice wasn't very slippery tonight--we could actually run instead of just sliding around. To my surprise, we were playing against one of my fellow ambassadors, Joe Morris. Despite this familiarity, we showed no mercy. My roommate scored a goal pretty early on, and we were getting some good shots on goal, but the opposing team managed to slip one past our goalkeeper at the last second. The game ended in a tie. Perhaps fate will bring us together for a rematch in the playoffs.

Intramural sports are starting back up this fall! I'm pumped because last night our co-ed flag football team won our first game 62-0. I could let everyone believe it was because I am exceptionally sweet, but truth be told, it is because everytime girls score a touchdown it counts as 9 points rather than 6. I try to play on at least one intramural team per quarter. I've had good luck with my baskeball teams. My women's basketball team has won the championship the past two years and my co-ed basketball team was runner-up last year. I'm hoping that the luck carries over to my football team this fall!

| Posted by Kyu Lee Senior, Aviation This week has been absolutely busy for me. I had to attend several meetings throughout the week. On Monday, I had to attend the General Assembly meeting for ISU (International Student Union) to represent Korean Student Association. It was our first meeting of the quarter, talked about our upcoming year budgets and upcoming events. I’ve also attended the Russ College of Engineering Scholarship, Engineering Ambassador, Alpha Eta Rho (Aviation Business Fraternity) and Alpha Omicron Alpha (Aviation Honor society) meetings. It has been rough week but at same time it was a big accomplishment for me other than my academics. This weekend, I settled down a little bit to catch up with my academics and exercises. I went to Ping (the Ohio University Rec Center) to play soccer, where there were about 15 people showed up to play pickup games. For people who are interested in playing soccer after classes, there are pickup games every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturdays. Usually we start at 6pm during weekdays and 5pm on Saturdays. |

| Posted by Monique Grier Junior, Industrial & Systems Engineering This year I promised myself that I would start the year off right by working out consistently. Yesterday, I attended my very first Pilates class. Pilates is based on the idea of working your core muscles and inhaling and exhaling at a constant pace. Throughout the class we did many moves that focused on working your abs, strengthening back muscles, and toning your legs. I was very surprised how sore my muscles are today! Even though it is not an aerobic exercise such as running, you still achieve the same effects. I really did enjoy the class and I am excited to attend another one next week! |
