This weekend myself and some of my friends that are in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) went on a little road trip to Ohio State to go see a Columbus Blue Jackets game. It was the first time I had ever been to a professional hockey game, and it was a lot of fun. They played the Mighty Ducks, which made it even better since I loved those movies when I was younger, and it even went to a shoot out. The Blue Jackets ended up winning, and then we all went out and visited with friends that are going to OSU. This is the first time I was able to make it up to see my friends at OSU this year, and it was a lot of fun to hang out with them. Overall, a great weekend.

Auto ID Final Project

It is the end of the quarter, so everyone is busy trying to wrap up their final projects. This quarter I am taking IT 354, Auto ID & Data Capture. For our final project we were asked to develop a check out system for a library. The system has to be able to check out books or other media types by manually entering the data, entering it through a bar code, or by passing the book through an RFID reader.

This project involves a lot of teamwork. We have to use our knowledge from our previous classes to develop the software interface and the code for our system. Our main problem was establishing the connection to the database. With some help of our professor we were able to upload the database onto our network server.

We got to deal with some pretty cool RFID hardware to write our data onto our tags. The software that reads the tags was developed by our professor, Dr. Berisso, and can be downloaded on our IT website. Check it out!

Another group created a supply chain management system to check the quality of parts for a production run they’ll be doing next quarter. Our presentations are on Monday, in front of a couple of our professors and the chair of the IT department. It could be a long Sunday, trying to wrap everything up.

Fall Quarter Projects

The quarter is coming close to an end, and all of my classes are getting pretty hectic with projects. I have projects in almost all of my classes that are wrapping up all of the content that we have gone over since the start of the year.

In my Entrepreneurship class we are creating a big presentation discussing our progress towards a business plan which should be pretty interesting. I also have a project involving quality assurance for one class, and another project that requires my group and I to write a software program that will be used for library management of books, etc. This should be a busy couple of weeks, but I think it’ll be cool to see all of the things that we’ve learned come together in these projects.

Starting the Job Search

Being a senior means starting your job search. In the past two weeks, we have had three different career fairs on campus. One was specifically for the Russ College, and one was only for Sales Centre students. I have found that a lot of companies are looking for technical sales people that can get out in the field and interact with their customers. So since last winter quarter, I have been involved in The Sales Centre and am pursuing a certificate in technical sales along with my IT major and business minor. (Check it out at thesalescentre.com.)

There are a lot of opportunities out there if you get out and look for them. Just through these career fairs, I have interviewed with 6 or 7 different companies for a positions like Application Engineer and Field Sales Engineer. So far the interviews have been going very well. Preparing for interviews and resume building are some of the skills that I have been able to improve with The Sales Centre. Now, I am waiting to hear back from several companies and find out how to continue the interview process. Hope it all goes well!

Intramural All-Stars

I have done a couple different intramurals sports in my time here at OU. My roommates and I have tried out softball, volleyball, floor hockey, dodgeball and even cornhole. Unfortunately, we haven’t had very much success in any of those. But this quarter we’re trying out flag football and the tides have turned. So far we’re 2 -0! Last week we put up some big numbers, beating the other team by mercy rule 48 – 18 and this week we won with a Doug Flutie like Hail Mary as the clock ran out! We’re in it to win it this quarter. I am looking to bring home that championship T-shirt that everyone is after.

Technology and Entrepreneurship

I am currently taking a course called Technology and Entrepreneurship. This course is all about taking a technology from the research stage, to an actual product and marketing a business around it. It is extremely interesting and a great opportunity. I would really like to start a business out of school, and this class gives me the tools necessary to reach this goal.

The class has been split into groups of about 5 or 6, and each member of the group brings a different background to the team. I am the engineering background for the group, and we also have a physics PhD student, several business and marketing members, and a video production major.

The course is taught by a young entrepreneur. I'm not completely sure, but he is probably about 30, and he already has two businesses that he has started. He took this same course through OSU, and he was able to start his businesses from this class. We are learning all about the different approaches and proven methods of taking a technology from an ideation phase to market.

I'm really excited to see where this course could take me.

Summer IT Co-op

The summer was fun. I went home to Aurora and worked at company called ERICO. I had a manufacturing engineering co-op with them, and it was really interesting. They are in the Non-Residential Construction Supply business, and my responsibilities included process improvement, and implementing new product lines. It was a really fun place to work for the summer, but I'm glad to be moving back into Athens finally. I know I'll be busy this quarter since I'm taking 21 credit hours, but I'm looking forward to a couple of my classes in particular, so it should be good.

Remembering How to Study

Tonight I am attempting to study for a test. It's odd, but I almost feel like I have forgotten how to study. The majority of my classes are project based and it's rare to have to actually study for a test in an IT class. I suppose that's a good problem to have- I definitely prefer applying concepts in a project than regurgitating facts on a test. Hope it goes well in the morning!

Bingo!

Well, today I enjoyed a few competitive rounds of Bingo at the local assisted living facility. My table of residents seemed quite cheery and friendly until one of the players won her third round, raising her prize amount to seventy-five cents. As she celebrated receiving her third quarter of the night, others frowned--the poor lady was accused of cheating! I'm not one to point fingers, but I do believe that she was playing by her own rules tonight. She continued to play by her own rules until the end of the night, when she left with earnings of one whole dollar!! (It was four quarters to be precise)

Saved the Best for Last

Today is the only day I have class this week! I couldn’t have planned it better. Since my freshman year I planned it where my last quarter of college was my easiest, where I could enjoy the sun, my friends, and make lasting memories. Spring Quarter for me consists of 12 credit hours, which means no classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays! Since today is over, I have no class tomorrow, a field trip to West Virginia to the Toyota Plant, then off to Columbus for a Corporate Trip for Engineering Ambassadors. The field trip on Wednesday is for one of my classes and should be interesting to see how Toyota does things in a manufacturing environment. The Corporate Trip to Columbus we are visiting a local High School and telling them about engineering/going to school at OU, and we are also visiting an OU alum at work and taking a tour of Westerman. What a nice week to a final spring quarter!
